Dancing to the Beat of a Different Drum

September 15, 2006 | In keeping busy | By Nat

My dance repertoire is getting old and stale.  It’s time to give it a kick in the pants.  And what better way to take in new dance moves than to learn a new dancing style.

Having already taken salsa dancing lessons, I have decided to expand my dancing repertoire by taking a stab at learning the mediterranean and exotic Belly Dancing ! Bellydancing has got some serious belly and hip twisting moves amongst many others that will help to brighten up any stale dance routine.

And if that wasn’t enough, I have also signed up for a course in brazilian drumming. I have found out that Brazilian drumming has pretty tricky but addictive rhythms, so I really enjoy my weekly 3 1/2 hour classes of drumming!

And there’s still a whole slew of other dance styles to choose from if those two don’t really interest you… here’s a starting list of dance styles to get your hips fantasizing.

  • Afro Contemporary Dancehall
  • Afro-Latin
  • Belly Dance

Did I miss any ?? Feel free to post a comment with the missing dance(s) if I did ?

The great thing about a lot of these dancing styles is that many dance schools have introductory classes for beginners, drop-in-when-you-can-without-paying-everyweek courses, one on one training and more advanced courses for when you are really shaking it up.

In Sydney, Australia, there’s Dance Central (http://www.dancecentral.com.au/), a school that offers a wide range of drop-in beginner and advanced courses at a very reasonable rate.

So give your dance routine the respect it deserves… and bring on the new moves !!
