Creative Mechanic in Rwanda

October 7, 2006 | In traveling | By Fred Keenan

In a game park in Rwanda, our truck overheated and died.  Both fan belts were wrecked.  There were no spares (or pantyhose) or rifles or radios.  Big cats were in the area.

The solution was the chin strap on my Tilley hat which was just the right length and with good strength and friction.  We refilled the rad from our water bottles, and got out to the Burundi Road safely.  My Tilley chin strap is still in Rwanda.
